ICP Orchestra
Frieze of Life
The nine-member, all-star ICP has long been one of the world’s most startling and ear-stretching jazz ensembles. Pianist Misha Mengelberg and drummer Han Bennink formed it in Amsterdam in 1967, during the throes of the free-jazz movement. In the spirit of those times, ICP concocts near-anarchy within many forms, from swing rave-ups to twisted tangos. Opening: the four-horn sextet Frieze of Life, the 2003 Golden Ear Best Outside Jazz Group. Inspired by innovations in jazz and modern composition, they create “the most exciting music in the region” – Seattle P-I.

Wayne Horvitz’s Joe Hill
The renowned composer/keyboardist presents the world premiere of Joe Hill: 16 Actions for Orchestra, Voice, and Soloist. In the tradition of Aaron Copeland and Charles Ives, Horvitz reworks themes from American folk tradition and songs of the Industrial Workers of the World – the “Wobblies.” Commissioned by Earshot Jazz with support from the prestigious multi-arts project of the Rockefeller Foundation, the creation of this formidable work was also made possible by the Allen Foundation for Music, and The Flynn Theater in Burlington, Vermont, where it will be performed in March of 2005.

Buddy Catlett Tribute
Buddy Catlett, a man who makes the bass sound as warm as a mother’s embrace, is honored by long-time colleagues. In the late 1940s, he gigged on Seattle’s fabled Jackson Street with Quincy Jones and Ray Charles, then hit the road from the 1950s to 1970s with Jones, Cal Tjader, Count Basie, and Louis Armstrong, and recorded landmark albums with them, Frank Sinatra, and others. In 1978 he returned to Seattle, where he is held in both awe and admiration. Ticket includes admission to a post-concert reception. Artists performing are the Floyd Standifer Quatert, the Ham Carson Group, and the Brian Nova Big Band. Special guests expected to appear include Ernestine Anderson, Michael Bisio, Paul deBarros, and more.
